Trail guide

The Unicoi Wine Trail links ten wineries across the North Georgia mountains of White County and its neighbors, clustered around the alpine town of Helen and the Nacoochee Valley (unicoiwinetrail.com). Geography makes the trail easy to split over two days. Cleveland is the hub — six of the ten members (CeNita, Limoges Cellars, Serenity Cellars, Tesnatee River, The Cottage, and Yonah Mountain) sit in and around Cleveland at the foot of Yonah Mountain — while Habersham Winery anchors Nacoochee Village just south of downtown Helen, and Creekstone and Sylvan Valley are minutes away in Sautee Nacoochee (unicoiwinetrail.com). A comfortable plan is a Cleveland-estates loop on day one and a Helen/Nacoochee Valley day on day two.

If you would rather not drive between tastings, several North Georgia operators run wine-tour transportation through this region. VIP Southern Tours, based in Sautee Nacoochee near Helen, runs public and private tours whose stops include Unicoi Trail members such as Serenity Cellars, The Cottage Vineyard & Winery, CeNita Vineyards, the Sylvan Valley Lodge tasting room, Kaya Vineyards and Creekstone Winery (vipsoutherntours.com). North Georgia Wine Tours, a Cleveland-based luxury transport company at 2048 Helen Hwy, services wineries including Yonah Mountain, Kaya and CeNita and is listed on the official Helen tourism site (helenga.org; northgawinetours.com). For groups coming up from the city, Wine Tours of Georgia offers chauffeured, door-to-door service from metro Atlanta into the Dahlonega/Cleveland vineyard region for parties of 2 to 13-plus (winetoursofgeorgia.com).

The trail is also unusual in how many of its wineries let you sleep on the property, which makes an overnight itinerary genuinely practical. CeNita Vineyards in Cleveland offers The Lodge at CeNita (four bedrooms, sleeps up to twelve, with a private hot tub) and a one-bedroom Vineyard Cabin steps from the tasting room (cenitavineyards.com). Yonah Mountain Vineyards rents three four-bedroom cottages — Dogwood, Magnolia and Maple — on its estate below Mount Yonah (yonahmountainvineyards.com). And Sylvan Valley Lodge & Cellars in Sautee Nacoochee, which Explore Georgia confirms sits “along the Unicoi Wine Trail” about four miles from downtown Helen, has lodge rooms, cabins and a suite alongside its on-site tasting room (sylvanvalleylodge.com; exploregeorgia.org).

Put together, a strong weekend is: day one through the Cleveland estates around Yonah Mountain — a night at CeNita or a Yonah cottage — then day two through Habersham in Nacoochee Village and the Sautee Nacoochee wineries, ending at Sylvan Valley Lodge. Hours vary by winery, so confirm each tasting room’s schedule (and any tour or lodging reservation) directly before you go (unicoiwinetrail.com).
